What Makes a Tuxedo Cape Different

Most cape styles are defined by drape. A tuxedo cape is defined by tailoring: a lapel that holds its line, a front that closes cleanly instead of falling open, and a flat shoulder rather than a gathered one. That structure is what lets it stand in for a blazer at a formal event, where a softly draped cape would read as a coat.

It is also the shortest of the formal cape styles. Where a full-length evening cape runs to around 47 inches, the Alya tuxedo styles sit at 30 inches — roughly jacket length — finishing at the hip so the line of a gown or a pair of high-waisted trousers stays visible underneath.

Each cape is cut and finished by hand after it is ordered, in 100% wool with a 100% silk lining. The hand-work differs by style: silk floss thread on the Alya capes, silk and sequin thread work with appliqué on Dita, metal and bead work on Esa — the same studio techniques used across the hand-embroidered wool capes.

How to Care for a Tuxedo Cape

A tuxedo cape should be dry-cleaned by a specialist rather than washed at home, to protect both the wool and the thread work. Beaded and sequinned pieces need a cleaner who will cover the embellishment before pressing. Between wears, brush the wool and air the cape rather than cleaning it.

Store it closed on a wide, padded hanger so the front holds its shape, or fold it flat with acid-free tissue — the lapel line is the part that creases first, and a fold set across it is difficult to press out. Keep it out of direct sunlight so the coloured threads do not fade.
